The New Normal Has The Potential To Drive Nearshore Outsourcing Even Further

Since the mid 90s, nearshoring, a business approach in which a third-party company provides specific services from another geographic location that is relatively close to the company’s area, has been a growing strategy to reduce operating costs for business.

Discover the top 5 benefits of nearshoring, from cost savings to better infrastructure. Learn how moving operations to a nearby country can provide skilled workers, cultural alignment, and more. Ideal for businesses looking for cost-effective solutions and improved business processes.

In the past decade, more companies have started exploring different locations to outsource their services. In the 1990s, many businesses moved to Asia or Eastern Europe to benefit from lower labor costs. However, Central America is now emerging as a top choice, especially for technology and service companies.

Take Honduras, for example. With a workforce of 3.4 million people, most of whom are between the ages of 18 and 35, the country presents a significant opportunity. Companies in the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and Information Technology Outsourcing (ITO) sectors are recognizing the potential of this young, vibrant workforce.

This is where nearshoring comes in. Nearshoring refers to the practice of relocating business processes to a nearby country rather than faraway regions. GK, a leading company in textiles and real estate, operates in countries like Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, and the United States. They provide the perfect setup for businesses considering nearshoring.

At Altia Smart City in San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa, companies can benefit from better collaboration, more efficient communication, and a higher level of commitment. The advantages of outsourcing are even more significant when you choose the right location.

The 5 Big Benefits of Nearshoring

Many U.S. companies are increasingly exploring nearshore options in Central America. They're drawn by the need to serve the growing Hispanic market and to find new, cost-effective, and less stressful environments for workers. Here are the top five benefits of this trend:

1. Shorter Flight Times

One major advantage of nearshoring is the ability to meet your team in person with ease. Shorter flight times mean it's easier to visit and work closely with your team, fostering better relationships and more effective collaboration. Unlike outsourcing to distant locations, where travel is lengthy and expensive, nearshoring allows for quick trips that can make a big difference in communication and project management.

2. Faster Adaptation Process

Sometimes, it takes a long time for outsourced teams to learn a company's way of doing things. With nearshoring, however, teams often share a similar culture and speak the same language as your company. This cultural and linguistic alignment makes it easier for them to adapt quickly and start contributing effectively from the get-go. The familiarity with Western business practices also helps in ensuring that the quality of work meets the expected standards.

3. Higher Participation Through a Similar Culture

A shared culture helps nearshore teams understand and solve problems more effectively. In Central American countries like Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico, the culture is very similar to Western culture. This cultural affinity ensures that the teams can provide solutions that resonate well with customer needs, leading to higher satisfaction rates and better overall performance.

4. Better Infrastructure

Many Central American countries boast robust infrastructure. For example, Altia Smart City has everything a business needs to operate smoothly, including state-of-the-art facilities, reliable internet connections, and advanced technological support. This well-established infrastructure makes nearshoring in these regions a more attractive option compared to some remote or offshore locations where such amenities might be lacking or unreliable.

5. English-speaking agents often serve as the lifeblood of successful outsourcing operations, driving many firms to undertake intensive and ongoing efforts to recruit, screen, train and retain agents. As a dedicated provider of office space for outsourcers, Altia Smart City has over the past decade forged relationships with language schools and universities for agent recruitment.

Altia Smart City maintains a database—fully accessible by clients—that profiles a large pool of potential agents, each pre-screened based on language abilities, higher education course of study, and other skills. These relationships allow Altia Smart City to leverage Honduras’ bilingual talent in a way to facilitate BPO operations and expansion, while saving outsourcers the hassle of establishing their own recruitment campaigns.

What’s more, Altia Smart City not only screens and hires agents on behalf of its clients, but it cultivates a sense of community in San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa. The country’s largest university, Unitec, has a campus in Altia Smart City, and the City features lifestyle amenities ranging from a gym to shopping to healthcare facilities and counseling services--all on-site. Such amenities foster agent wellness and loyalty. Predictably, more satisfied agents mean lower attrition and higher quality CX management.

Given the focus on education and sustainable business operations, nothing like it exists elsewhere in the American nearshore, including in such well-known BPO hubs as Colombia.

Another major friction point for outsourcers is finding the right space. Outsourcers though generally must contend with building or retrofitting offices to enjoy a suitable office space.

That expressly is not the case at Altia Smart City, where every outsourcer instead enjoys turnkey solutions. Strong English-language capacity is a must, not just for US end-users but also for those in Britain and elsewhere. Multi-city delivery will be critical as a means of balancing work volumes between sites, should a pandemic or natural disaster threaten business continuity. And above all, outsourcers must have the flexibility to meet end-user demands with a workforce and regulatory system that works as well when agents are based at home as in a contact center.

Finding fluent English in a flexible workforce can be daunting though. High operational costs and trade-offs related to offshoring, such as long travel times and strong accents, could imperil the CX plans of many outsourcers.

It’s in light of these competitive realities that Honduras shines as a nearshore hub with trans-Atlantic delivery appeal. Honduras offers a bevy of benefits for companies seeking to outsource customer management.

Honduras is less than a 2.5-hours’ flight from Miami; about 4.5-hours from New York. This makes the country a promising destination for US and Canadian BPO executives. Just over 10-hours from Spain, Honduras also can be easily reached from Britain with connecting flights. That accessibility is a far cry from offshore locales like India and the Philippines, where executives traveling from North America or Europe face a 14-plus hour flight only to be welcomed by ceaseless traffic jams.

Moreover, English-language compatibilities fit into a series of other traits unique to Honduras. The country’s two-city delivery position, built around the international business center of San Pedro Sula and the capital of Tegucigalpa, situates Honduras as the only country in Central America with bona fide delivery from multiple locations.

Such a unique strength for a market of its size helps to ensure that agent wages remain stable. It also ensures that work volumes can balance between cities, a key means of ensuring business continuity.

Other social changes promise even more dynamic benefits. As a business center, Honduras is hewing ever closer to Europe. European migration has increased in recent decades, while at the same time business-minded Hondurans have gained significant experience abroad, not only in the United States but in England, Spain, Ireland and elsewhere. Many are returning not only fluent in English, but with MBAs and other graduate degrees.

The result is that San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa are ever more infused with European influence. That cultural affinity not only eases direct transactions, but it makes Honduras a great place for European firms seeking collaboration. Hondurans understand the direct demands needed by foreign firms, and they grasp the subtleties of what goes into satisfying European consumers.

Honduras’ leading BPO provider, Altia Smart City, offers an additional enticement: tax-free service delivery. Altia Smart City is a free trade zone for the BPO industry, ensuring that outsourcers can remit their full profits. As margins for many outsourced services are globally whittled down, this is even more crucial to bottom-line performance.

Altia has taken the additional step to help clients set up and recruit agents based on a candidate profile specified by the client. Once hired, Honduras’ labor laws vest outsourcers with flexibility in hiring and firing workers. In other words, it is a full suite of options aimed at easing operations for outsourcing clients.

These distinct advantages come together in a one-stop solution at Altia. At Altia Smart City, travel-weary outsourcing executives do not face the dour prospect of having to visit multiple sites spread out across towns. Instead, they enjoy the convenience of travel to just one place: shopping, gyms and other amenities are already on-site, and a hotel is under construction. In this way, Altia Smart City couples the convenience of urban life with a unique focus on outsourcing CX management.

Outsourcers’ strength will increasingly be defined by English-language capabilities and operational flexibility.
